I investigate how the activities or traits of particular organisms affect biodiversity and functions in the ecosystems they live, with emphasis on impacts that proceed via the physical creation, modification, and maintenance of habitats - or physical ecosystem engineering. Most of my current field research focuses on physical-biological interactions in Argentinean rocky intertidal habitats, considering both the effect of physical ecosystem engineers (such as mussels, macroalgae, or rock-boring bivalves) on their biodiversity and functions, and the effect of physical factors (such as wave action and dessication) on these engineers. Other field research relates to biogeography and natural history of intertidal organisms. I am also involved in synthetic, conceptual developments thar relate the ecosystem engineering concept with other fields of ecological research (e.g., invasive species, biogeochemical processing) and aid to its integration into ecological theory.
